The Halifax Women’s Network’s Immediate Past-President, Brenda Saunders/Todd, was recently appointed Board President of Dress for Success Halifax, currently celebrating their 10th anniversary.  As a Certified Corporate Etiquette & International Protocol Consultant and SpeakersTrainingCamp Instructor, Saunders/Todd brings a wealth of knowledge to her incoming role.  “I am thrilled to be serving my community through an organization that is in complete alignment with my personal values.  In my business, I teach confidence and provide a supportive environment; to be able to provide this to our clients for free, is the icing on the cake for me!” she says.

Answer 365 has been honoured with the Canadian Call Management Association (CAM-X)’s Award of Excellence for the sixth consecutive year. Now in its 21st year, the Award of Excellence program recognizes message services who score 80% or better over a six-month evaluation period in all criteria areas, including courtesy, response time, accuracy, and overall service to their clients. “In a service industry, nothing builds employee confidence more than positive feedback from satisfied customers,” says CAM-X President Gary Blair. “We congratulate Answer 365 for their achievements.”

Through a 1.6 million dollar purchase of 2,137 LED street light fixtures from LED Roadway Lighting Limited,  the Halifax Regional Municipality is about to become the first major Canadian municipality to convert to LED street light fixtures. “With energy costs continuing to rise, this will allow us to cut our lighting infrastructure spending by as much as two-thirds over the next 20 years,” says Mayor Peter Kelly. “As well, these fixtures will play a vital role in our continuing efforts to make HRM one of the greenest cities in North America.”

Mojo Labs Co. are the winners in the 2010 Best Big Idea contest sponsored by the Nova Scotia Co-operative Council. “Our TitanFile entry was judged to be the best from 118 applicants for this prestigious award that provides financial assistance and advice, and will help us reach our expected launch of a few months. TitanFile will enable elimination of identity theft with the transmission of sensitive documents, controlled by the user to specific recipients only, eliminated on command or planned,” says Milan Vrekic, President of Mojo Labs.

Once again this fall Symphony Nova Scotia presented its free Musical Munchkins program at public libraries throughout the region, introducing even more 3- to 5-year-olds to music and motion in a fun, interactive way.  “Response to this program from staff and patrons around the region has been unanimously positive,” says Heather MacKenzie, library branch manager at Alderney Gate. “This fun and lively introduction to music and movement brings preschoolers, parents (and grandparents!) together to enjoy dance, games and other activities through different styles of music. We are very grateful to Symphony Nova Scotia and the participating musicians for allowing us to bring such a high quality cultural program to families in our community.”

YWCA Halifax recently announced the location of a new licensed child care centre in Spryfield at 346-358 Herring Cove Road. The new child care centre is expected to open in the summer of 2012 and will be licensed for 57 full-time children. “We chose to build our new child care centre in Spryfield because this area has no licensed child care—and hasn’t for a number of years,” says Tanis Crosby, Executive Director, YWCA Halifax. “Access to affordable and convenient childcare is crucial to a woman’s ability to stay employed and to fully participating in life.” Learn more at www.ywcahalifax.com.

Mount Saint Vincent University welcomed Dr. Ramona Lumpkin as its 12th President and Vice-Chancellor during a convocation ceremony on October 24. As President and Vice-Chancellor of the Mount, Dr. Lumpkin will be responsible for leading the administrative and academic teams and advancing the university’s strategic plan as well as its Building Tomorrow Together capital campaign. “When I made the decision to join the Mount, I knew I was joining a University with a solid reputation for delivering unique programs, providing innovative approaches to learning, and making an impact not only on its students, but on the larger community,” says Dr. Lumpkin. “I am delighted to be part of an institution with such a rich history and an exciting future.”

Discovery Centre and Nova Scotia Power recently announced a new partnership which will see the science move from its present Barrington Street location Nova Scotia Power’s Lower Water Street complex. “Nova Scotia Power is an ideal partner, one immersed in the latest technology and innovation, with a tech savvy workforce, and with an ideal facility that we can adapt to the needs of a modern 21st century Science Centre,” says Dov Bercovici, CEO & President of Discovery Centre. Nova Scotia Power will provide Discovery Centre with rent-free space for 25 years in a prime, highly accessible waterfront location. Nova Scotia Power and its parent company, Emera Inc., will also donate $1 million over five years towards Discovery Centre’s capital costs for the move, from a fund that Emera shareholders provide to the company to support worthy community initiatives. “The young minds we engage in science today will be the researchers and engineers who devise solutions for our future needs as a society, including our energy needs,” says Rob Bennett, President & CEO of Nova Scotia Power. “Nova Scotia Power and Emera are committed to supporting the communities where we live and work, and we’re proud to support Discovery Centre and science education as we move to our new offices. We want our new space to be an active, inviting part of the community, and Discovery Centre is a perfect fit.”

Halifax Stanfield International Airport (HSIA) recently signed a co-operative agreement with the Incheon International Airport at a ceremony in Incheon, South Korea. “The fact that for the last seven years Incheon and Halifax Stanfield have both led the world in the Airport Service Quality global customer service awards has created a common bond through our shared commitment to superior service,” notes Halifax International Airport Authority President & CEO Tom Ruth. “This agreement is a terrific opportunity for HSIA and for Nova Scotia. Incheon is one of the largest, most progressive airports in the world, standing second globally in air cargo traffic and twelfth in the world in passenger numbers.”
