Mount Saint Vincent University recently celebrated the installation of its 10th President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kathryn E. Laurin. As a special tribute to her musical background, a piano composition (entitled Three Preludes for Piano) was written in Laurin’s honour by composer David McIntyre. "The installation of a new president is an event which bridges the past, present and future,” says Board of Governors Chair Gwen  Haliburton. “It provides an opportunity for the community to reflect on the University's mandate and mission, welcome and demonstrate support for the new leader and unite in a celebration of renewal and new beginnings.” Visit MSVU online at www.msvu.ca.

Garrison Brewing Co. has officially entered the craft-brewed soda business. Under the Cannonball Soda Co. name, Garrison will produce premium, all-natural, unpasteurized soda. Flavours include Root Beer, Blueberry Cream Soda, Ginger n’ Lime, Tangerine and Chocolate Soda. “This is a natural product line extension for us, and something we’ve wanted to do for several years,” says brewery President, Brian Titus. Mr. Titus is also excited about having a non-alcoholic offering for families, tourists and non-drinkers. Michelin North America (Canada) Inc. recently celebrated 35 years of manufacturing in Nova Scotia by presenting the Discovery Centre with a donation of $35,000. “At Michelin, it is only through discovery that we can introduce new products and improve the progress of mobility for society,” said George Sutherland, General Counsel for Michelin in Canada. “This is why a partnership with Discovery Centre is such a natural fit for Michelin.” The contribution will support the Centre both in-house and with workshops offered to schools across Nova Scotia. Ron Lovett of The RFL Group of Companies/Source Security was recently named the Nova Scotia winner of the Business Development Bank of Canada’s Young Entrepreneur Award 2006. Sarah Dennis of The Chronicle Herald was recently featured in an article in Dalhousie University’s alumni magazine. Ms. Dennis has helped to establish the Willam Dennis Chair in Pediatric Epilepsy Research at Dalhousie University and the IWK Health Centre, in memory of her brother.

The Miramichi Regional Health Authority (MRHA) has recently awarded Ergonomic Systems Associates (ESA) a two-year contract. The contract requires ESA to design and deliver an ergonomics program that emphasizes injury prevention through back care. The program, which is to be designed and delivered to become a long-term fixture of employee safety and injury prevention services, will consist of the delivery of training and consulting services to for all staff members of the MRHA. Connors Diving Services is pleased to announce the completion of internal repairs to a major effluent pipeline in Nova Scotia. The project was a collaboration between the Connors Diving Services and Miller Pipeline Corp. based in Indianapolis, Indiana. This particular job was unique because the pipe is 42 inches in diameter and 4176 feet long. Two four-hour dives were done to complete the inspection and repairs with a penetration depth of 1953 feet. This is the deepest underwater penetration performed in Canada and is a testament to the hard work and determination of all parties involved.

Bridgeway Academy is pleased to announce that Dr. Henry Bishop will be an instructor for the remainder of the school year. Dr. Bishop is the Chief Curator and Director of the Black Cultural Centre in Nova Scotia. He teaches students the Art of African Drumming, which will bring an exciting hands-on-activity for students resulting in increased creativity. The children will be participating in the drumming, which has been linked to the release of endorphins creating the sensation of good health along with increased self-worth and empowerment.
