The federal government has implemented the Home Renovation Tax Credit for work performed or goods acquired to upgrade an eligible residential dwelling, offering a tax credit up to $1350 on expenditures of $10,000. “Many people do not realize that the professional services of a Registered Interior Designer are expenses that can be claimed,” says Pam Tower of Tower Interiors. “A Registered Interior Designer can design and draft the drawings for your addition or renovation. The 2009 Taste of Nova Scotia Prestige Awards were announced in November. The Member of the Year award was given to Michael Howell of Tempest Restaurant in Wolfville. Recognized Chamber members include Garrison Brewery for Innovative Product of the Year for its Baltic Porter and Sandra Gardiner of the Five Fisherman as Restaurant Server of the Year. “The Prestige Awards are an opportunity to recognize our Taste members and their accomplishments… a chance to celebrate the best in our province,” says Janice Ruddock, executive director of Taste of Nova Scotia. Erik Wolf, president of the International Culinary Tourism Association, adds “The room was full of passion. Kerr Global Communications has moved to a new location ahead of schedule. Kerr, along with sister company Frontier Technologies, have relocated to Raddall Avenue. “In the past 5 months, we have added companies such as NSCC, Dalhousie University, SURE Courier, Super Clean, and Ambassatours to our GPS system. In addition, our current clients’ needs have been expanding, so this move was necessary. Our commitment to our clients is second to none, and this move will further our ability to service both new and current customers”, says Sean McKenna. “We simply needed a space that was more reflective of the aggressive growth goals we have set.”
Miller Tire recently announced a strategic partnership with TireCraft Canada. Under the deal, Miller Tire will acquire 25% ownership in the national tire marketing company and become the exclusive marketer of the TireCraft name in Atlantic Canada. The deal will also provide Miller Tire with access to tire brands which have previously been unavailable or in limited supply in Atlantic Canada. “The Tirecraft Banner and program will bring Miller Tire’s customers improved service, competitive pricing, and greater selection through national cooperation and buying power” says Corey Miller, CEO of Miller Tire.
Theodore Tugboat, the friendly ambassador of Nova Scotia, visited Boston recently to take part in the annual Christmas tree lighting event where Nova Scotia presents the city of Boston with the annual gift of a giant Christmas tree. He docked in Boston Harbour at the World Trade and Convention Center and offered free tours to the people of Boston. The city of Boston was also presented with a plaque recognizing the people of Boston as official friends of Theodore Tugboat. Each of Nova Scotia Community College’s (NSCC) 13 campuses has now been recognized by the Building Owner & Manager’s Association (BOMA) with a BOMA Building Environmental Standards (BESt) certification of at least Level One. BOMA BESt is considered the industry standard for environmental management of existing commercial buildings. Waterfront Campus achieved the top Level Four certification earning the highest score to date by any building in Canada. “This is another step towards our commitment to environmental stewardship. Through the BOMA BESt auditing process we are ensuring that even our campuses that are over 30 years old are as sustainable as possible,” says NSCC President Joan McArthur-Blair. “The BOMA BESt process places us on a track of continual improvement; that’s a perfect fit for the culture of life-long learning NSCC encourages and supports throughout the province.”
This November the Nova Scotia Association of Chefs and Cooks celebrated their annual Gala Dinner at the Delta Halifax Hotel. Awards were also handed out in four categories. Honoured Chamber members include NSCC Akerley Campus (Establishment of the Year); Chef Peter Dewar, NSCC Kingstech Campus (Culinarian of the Year); and Chef Luis Clavel, Holiday Inn Harbourview Hotel (Chef of the Year).
Remedy Facial Bar & Spa was recently recognized in several categories of The Coast’s Best of Halifax 2009. The spa was recognized as the Best Manicure/Pedicure and Runner-Up for Best Spa, while Angela Bishop and Katherine Hanlon were recognized as Best Aesthetician and Best Aesthetician Runner Up respectively. “We are a small spa by comparison to others in Halifax, with only 6 staff, so we think these results are remarkable,” says owner Angela Bishop. “We want to thank our family, friends, and clients for their generous support in voting us Best of Halifax in many categories. This has been an incredible year and we look forward to seeing everyone at the spa to share in our joy and gratitude.”
