MacDonnell Group recently signed a license agreement with the College of the North Atlantic in Doha, Qatar (CNA-Q), giving CNA-Q the rights to deliverMacDonnell Maritime Security Training Programs throughout the Middle East. “We at the Security Academy are excited about our partnership with MacDonnell,” says Bernard Barbe, executive director of the Security Academy for CNA-Q. “We’re looking forward to delivering our first course shortly.” Damian Stoilov, director of Marketing and Business Development for MacDonnell, adds, “The conclusion of the MacDonnell-CNA-Q license achieves our objective of bringing world-class maritime security training programs to the region’s port facilities. Scotian WindFields Inc. recently announced the installation of a 100kW wind turbine at the Atlantic Superstore in Porters Lake – its first commercial scale wind generator in Nova Scotia. The turbine will provide onsite renewable energy and will account for approximately 25 per cent of the store’s energy usage. “Nova Scotia has one of the world’s best wind resources,” says Scotian WindFields COO Dan Roscoe. “We find that local businesses are realizing they can capitalize on one of Nova Scotia’s great natural advantages in our superior wind energy resources. Turning it into a business advantage has great potential to stimulate Nova Scotia’s economic development throughout the province.”
Students from Halifax and Dartmouth recently worked on a project called Settling into Schools, in partnership with video production company Pink Dog Productions. These educational video tools were developed to assist teachers in helping immigrant youth integrate into Canadian school culture and to celebrate diversity in the classroom with all students – those born in Canada, as well as students born in other countries. Created by students for students, they’re used in schools as part of the Career and Life Management or Social Studies curriculum. In recognition of International Day for Biological Diversity (May 22), the Nova Scotia Nature Trust took a pledge to increase its efforts to reduce biodiversity loss in Nova Scotia by committing to Countdown 2010, an international effort to step up efforts to stop biodiversity loss before the end of the year 2010. 2010 signals the deadline under the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity to “achieve a significant reduction of the current rate of biodiversity loss.” Canada is a signatory to this UN treaty and many groups in Canada, including governments, individuals and conservation organizations, carry out the work of reducing biodiversity loss. The Nova Scotia Export Achievement Awards for 2009 were handed out at a recent ceremony in Halifax. Honoured Chamber members include Maritime Paper Products (longterm exporter award); TeamSpace Canada Inc. (export growth through partnership award); Origin BioMed Inc. (export growth through sales award); and top winner Nautel Limited, which took home the export growth through product development award as well as Exporter of the Year. The 2009 Summit Creative Awards competition recently honoured Spectacle Group with the Silver Award for its brand redesign of Taste of Nova Scotia. The first Taste of Nova Scotia Cutting Edge Culinary Competition took place recently at the annual Saltscapes Exposition. Ten Taste of Nova Scotia chefs faced-off on the culinary stage and executive chef Renée Lavallée of the Five Fishermen restaurant took home first prize. “It was an honour to compete in this competition.
