Atlantic Canada’s Top 100 Employers for 2011 have been announced. The competition is organized by the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers and recognizes the employers in Canada’s four Atlantic provinces that lead their industries in offering exceptional places to work. The Halifax Mooseheads and their fans recently raised enough funds to purchase a SMART Syringe Pump for the IWK Health Centre.  These funds were raised during the annual Battle of Nova Scotia game on December 30th through a jersey raffle of the 20 Nova Scotia Mooseheads jerseys.  In total, $4,646 was raised, which more than covered the $4,000 cost of the SMART Syringe Pump. “We feel the generosity of Mooseheads fans when it comes to these community driven initiatives is unparalleled in major junior hockey,” says Brian Urquhart, Vice President Business Operations. “Our fans have now helped raise just under $50,000 for 5 great organizations so far this season, which include the IWK, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Special Olympics, Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Gardens and the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation – Atlantic Region”.

IWK Health Centre Foundation recently announced that Dr. Margaret Martinello Magner will take over as President and CEO of the IWK Health Centre Foundation effective April 1, 2011. “Margaret has incredible experience and passion, and she has devoted her career and life to make a difference in meaningful ways,” says Paul Conrod, Chairman of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees. “She is creative, strategic, and a wonderful team builder. We are extremely excited about what she will bring to the IWK Foundation.” Dr. Magner has had a career in fundraising, strategy, leadership, and teaching across North America, most recently as Director of Development for the William J. Clinton (Bill Clinton) Foundation in New York City since 2008. 

Music Nova Scotia recently announced that Nova Scotia Music Week 2011 will return to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia this November for a third consecutive year. The Canadian Organization of Campus Activities (COCA) will also host their Eastern Regional Conference in Yarmouth during Nova Scotia Music Week. “This partnership will see entertainment buyers from 16 post secondary institutions from across Eastern Canada attend music week to shop for talent. Music Week is about business not only for the host community but also for our members,” says Scott Long, executive director of Music Nova Scotia. “Adding the COCA regional to our International and Bringin’ it Home buyers programs will see upwards of 60 music buyers attending the event in 2011.”

Dalhousie University recently announced the appointment of Stephen Hartlen as Assistant Vice President (Industry Relations) and Executive Director of the Industry Liaison and Innovation Office (ILI).  “The hiring of Stephen Hartlen signals an exciting new era of industry engagement by Dalhousie,” says Martha Crago, Vice President, Research. “We (have) a dynamic and experienced leader in business development to strengthen Dalhousie's connections to the private sector and government and capitalize on the synergies between them. His leadership can increase the quality of such partnerships and create new opportunities for both Dalhousie's researchers and for our industrial partners.” Mr. Hartlen spent the last eight years at Innovacorp, serving as Vice President (Mentoring) and most recently, Interim President and CEO.

After nine years of leading the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation – Atlantic Region, Nancy Margeson will retire as CEO in March 2011. “During her tenure Nancy has significantly raised the profile of CBCF – Atlantic Region,” says Sue Fowler, Chair, CBCF – Atlantic Region Board of Directors. “Nancy’s ingenuity is the reason the Tour for the Cure – a big pink bus filled with breast health information – visited every corner of the region promoting early detection of breast cancer. Her leadership mobilized governments across the region to fund digital mammography equipment, which has led to an increase in breast screening rates. Nancy’s unwavering passion for creating a future without breast cancer will be missed by all who have worked with her.”

Dress for Success Halifax
's recent first-time event called Kick it Up!, a shoe and handbag event,  welcomed 300 women to Palooka’s Gym on Gottingen Street in Halifax. Over 40 pair of brand new shoes and handbags were donated with the receipt to enable each lucky winner the opportunity to exchange the shoes for the correct size once their name was drawn from various ballot boxes (penny auction style). The event raised and raised over $10,000, which will allow Dress for Success Halifax to continue to serve their clients.

Duggan International Group recently had the opportunity to participate in the Caribbean Marketplace, January 16 -18 in Montego Bay, Jamaica.  Caribbean Marketplace is a member-only event hosted by the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association.

Senomix Software Inc. has released a BlackBerry version of their networked office time tracking system, Senomix Timesheets, with that application placing as a Regional Winner in RIM's 2010 BlackBerry Super Apps Developer Challenge. “We've designed Senomix Timesheets to link all employees through an office's own Mac, Windows and BlackBerry computers," says Charles O’Dale of Senomix.  "People can connect over a secured office network or through the internet, with the application compatible with both traditional keyboard BlackBerry devices and the new touchscreen 9800 Torch." Learn more at www.senomix.com.

 The Nova Scotia Nature Trust was recently chosen to receive national recognition and funding through a special initiative of TD Friends of The Environment Foundation (TD FEF). In December, after receiving nearly 200 submissions from across the country, TD FEF awarded four $5,000 grants recognizing excellence in the not-for-profit sector, one in each of four categories:  leadership in fundraising, volunteer engagement, innovation, and organizational leadership. The Nature Trust received top honours in the innovation category.  “We are honoured to be recognized nationally for our innovative and ground-breaking conservation work,” says Nature Trust Executive Director Bonnie Sutherland.  “TD FEF’s grant will help the Nature Trust to continue advancing land conservation and engaging the public in protecting our special places, within Nova Scotia and beyond.”

Stephen Duff and Jennifer Mills have been appointed as Co-CEOs of Precision BioLogic Inc. Michael Scott, who has served as Chairman and CEO of Precision BioLogic for the past 15 years, will continue to play an active role as Executive Chair. “The Board and I have tremendous confidence in Steve and Jennifer’s capacity to jointly lead Precision BioLogic as the company continues on its growth path,” says Scott. “This is a very positive step in the ongoing development of our organization and I’m delighted to be supporting them from the new vantage point of Executive Chair.”

Alice Housing was the recipient of two major awards recently at the annual Donner Canadian Foundation Awards.  For the fifth time in 7 years, Alice Housing was the recipient of the Excellence in the Provision of Basic Necessities Award.  In addition, Alice Housing was recognized this year with the 2010 Peter F. Drucker Award for Non-Profit Management which is presented each year to a non-profit organization with a consistent record of excellence and innovation in management and delivery of services. “This is a tremendous feat for such a small organization,” notes Executive Director Joanne Bernard. “To be recognized in our category for Basic Necessities is wonderful but to receive the much coveted Peter F. Drucker award speaks to the tremendous and consistent professional efforts of staff, the Board of Directors and volunteers.”

Tower Interiors Ltd. recently won the 2010 Peak Award from the NS Home Builders Association for Marketing Initiative in recognition of its implementation of an effective email marketing campaign. The campaign targets clients and industry partners, keeping them up to date on news, products and promotions. This campaign also previously won the 2009 All Star award from Constant Contact. “Tower Interiors is very pleased to be recognized for this marketing campaign and encourages other businesses to implement this effective, inexpensive and current form of marketing,” says President Pam Tower. Tower Interiors was also recently named a winner of the Consumer Choice Awards for Interior Design. With the addition of Kelly Tire in Fredericton, Tirecraft continues to add to its presence in Atlantic Canada and across the rest of the country. Since the brand’s resurrection two years ago, Tirecraft has gone from 89 locations to over 140 across Canada making it one of the fastest growing independent tire dealers in North America.  “As we increase our numbers, the benefits to consumers just go up,” says Corey Miller, President of Tirecraft Atlantic. “If they buy a tire in Halifax and have a problem in Ontario, they’ll be covered under our national warranty program.”

 Atlantis Systems Eduplus (ASE) has been awarded a number of contracts recently, including one to build a maintenance training support system for the CF-18 Hornet fighter jet, as well as three new projects to provide Virtual Maintenance Rehearsal Trainers to aircraft technicians. “Our Eduplus team, under the capable leadership of Carl Daniels, has once again confirmed the confidence of the Canadian Forces in our ability to successfully deliver contracts on time and within budget,” says Henrik Noesgaard, CEO and Chairman of the Board.   

 The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nova Scotia (ICANS) recently announced that Michael Kennedy, CA, is the recipient of its 2010 Ross L. Towler CA of the Year Award. “As this year’s CA of the Year, Michael Kennedy personifies an excellent symbol of volunteerism and leadership, and serves as a wonderful mentor to our new CAs,” says ICANS’ CEO and Executive Director, Michele Wood-Tweel, FCA. ICANS also recently announced its newest FCAs: Hon.
