The Environmental Services Association of Nova Scotia (ESANS) has retained Adam Cooney, P.Eng., as its Executive Director. Cooney is well known to ESANS as former Director, Vice-President, and President of ESANS, and brings over 10 years of management experience in the environmental sector, as well as key participation in multi-stakeholder environmental sector working groups and organizing committees. “Adam's demonstrated vision, energy, passion, leadership, and commitment will continue to serve ESANS' membership well as he steps into this new position. On behalf of the ESANS Membership and the Board of Directors, I congratulate Adam and look forward to working with him to advance ESANS as it further becomes Nova Scotia's premier resource for the environmental sector,” says ESANS President Andrew Thalheimer.

Atlantica Hotel Halifax recently welcomed Executive Chef Luis Clavel to its team. Clavel was named Nova Scotia Chef of the Year for 2008 and 2009 by the Nova Scotia Chefs and Cooks Association; he was also named The Atlantic Provinces 2008 Competing Chef of the Year, and placed second at the Canadian Chef of the year competition that same year.  "Chef Luis Clavel is a man of exceptionally high personal standards who values genuine collaboration with his team and is passionate about mentoring his colleagues to create an environment where colleagues are passionate about food and continuous learning. Symphony Nova Scotia recently presented a series of free concerts in its third annual Symphony Week, September 22 to 26. Symphony Nova Scotia musicians gave free, live performances in a wide range of styles at a wide range of venues. “We’re delighted to kick off our 28th season with Symphony Week,” says Symphony Nova Scotia CEO Erika Beatty. “It’s a great way to celebrate our upcoming concert season and give audiences a chance to sample some of the music they’ll be hearing. The Strait Regional School Board recently implemented GPS technology from Kerr Global Communications as a vehicle tracking and fleet management tool in its fleet of school bus and maintenance vehicles.  To assist with the costs associated with the purchase of the GPS technology, the School Board successfully applied for a $121,984 grant to Conserve Nova Scotia through its Greening the Nova Scotia School Bus Fleet program.  “What this means for the school board is the ability to not only significantly reduce operating costs, but to also create a much safer environment for both students and employees,” says Mike Herenberg, VP at Kerr Global Communications.

Delegates from 13 countries met recently in Halifax during the 2010 Culinary Tourism World Summit. The summit, presented by the International Culinary Tourism Association and hosted by Taste of Nova Scotia, was an opportunity for delegates to discuss culinary tourism best practices, and to use this global forum for exchanging ideas and bettering the industry. “We have a strong, local, passionate culinary tourism industry in Nova Scotia that is now being recognized internationally,“ says Janice Ruddock, executive director of Taste of Nova Scotia. “Aside from the straight economic benefits of hosting an event of this caliber, think about the international exposure our local producers, chefs and restaurants will have without even leaving the province.”

Pink Dog Productions Inc. recently launched ‘The Right to Bare Arms’, a video project developed to promote cultural diversity through the use of humour. Launched at Citizenship and Immigration Canada offices in Halifax, these video shorts were produced, directed and filmed by new Canadians.  Each video uses humour to celebrate differences while recognizing the many similarities among people born in Canada and new Canadians.  Watch the free-to-download videos at http://pinkdog.ca/rtba/index.htm.

Office Interiors was selected by BEI PROs, the co-authors of the Office Products Industry's benchmarking model, because of their demonstrated service excellence. The firm achieved this certification by successfully completing training in elite practices, demonstrating the ability to achieve elite service metrics and willingness to have their ongoing audit results proving consistent achievement customer service metrics.

Dr. Michael Leiter of the Centre for Organizational Research & Development at Acadia University has been awarded funding from the Canadian Institute of Health Research to conduct a three-year action project looking at how to use civility to build healthier workplaces. “Generally, incivility in the workplaces comes down to three main excuses that people use. Pressure: I was so stressed I snapped at you; Toughness: You gotta kick butt to get anyone to work around here; and, Sensitivity: I wasn’t really rude; people here just are too precious and lack a sense of humour,” says Dr. Leiter. A paper on this subject authored by Leiter and associates entitled “Rudeness rationales: Whatever were they thinking?” recently won the best paper in Healthcare Management, for the Journal of Academy of Management.

On September 13th the United Way welcomed an audience of 40 to help launch its latest initiative, GenNext. GenNext hopes to engage people in their 20s and 30s and show them that philanthropy is not an abstract concept, and that generosity and kindness have a direct impact on the quality of life for people in Halifax. Halifax’s tourism industry has been recognized with seven nominations at the National Awards for Tourism Excellence. Nominated Chamber members include RCR Hospitality (Business of the Year – Multiple Unit), Halifax International Airport Authority (Corporate Partner of the Year), Waterfront Development Corporation (Corporate Partner of the Year), Halifax Sociable! by Destination Halifax (Online Marketing Campaign of the Year) and The Prince George Hotel (Award for Excellence in Human Resources Development). “We’re thrilled by the great representation of Halifax amongst the 2010 National Awards for Tourism Excellence nominees,” says Stuart Joliffe, Chair of the Destination Halifax Board of Directors. “The growth and development of both the individual organizations and of the collective Halifax tourism industry deserve to be recognized. From the moment they arrive, the Halifax region offers visitors a superior tourism experience – congratulations to all of those who work to make that happen.” The winners will be announced this month in Gatineau, Quebec.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nova Scotia (ICANS) has announced its 2010-2011 Executive Council. The Nova Scotia SPCA has been nominated in two categories for the national Summit Awards which will be presented at the International Summit for Urban Animal Strategies. The first nomination, in the area of Animal Wellness comes as a result of the society’s innovative foster and palliative care program for dogs of advanced age or with serious illness. The second, in the area of Education, is for the NS SPCA’s work with Girl Guides of Canada , developing a program called “Caring for Animals – Pawprints on Your Heart Challenge”  which allows Guides to earn a badge after learning about animal care and welfare. Over 500 girls participated in the initial launch of the program.

Garrison Brewing Company won four medals at the recent Canadian Brewing Awards in Toronto: Gold for Black IPA, Silver for Hopyard Ale, and Bronze for both Grand Baltic Porter and Irish Red Ale. With more than 390 beers submitted from 76 breweries across Canada, this was the largest national competition to date. "This event gets more competitive each year as the craft beer scene continues to explode," says Brewmaster Daniel Girard. "It is also very gratifying to see experimental brews like the Black IPA recognized. It shows an industry that is alive and evolving."

Mount Saint Vincent University now has a greener campus, thanks to its transition to natural gas from Heritage Gas. The conversion cuts the University's operating costs by 10 per cent and eliminates sulfur and particulate emissions. It will also cut carbon dioxide emissions by about 35 per cent. "With the conversion to natural gas, the Mount continues to be a leader in social, environmental and economic responsibility," says interim president, Alexa McDonough. "This project was made possible through a very strong partnership with Heritage Gas and the provincial government and contributes to a more sustainable future for the university.”

Halifax Stanfield International Airport’s new parking garage has been recognized at the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) 2010 Design Awards as co-winner for parking structures designed to hold 1000 or more cars. The purpose of the PCI Design Awards program is to recognize design excellence and construction quality using precast concrete. This year, at the 48th annual awards, three juries selected 30 winners from over 135 entries from all over North America.

Dalhousie University’s new Mona Campbell Building is now the campus’ greenest place to go to class, with features including heat pumps, high-efficiency lighting, low flow bathroom fixtures, and a cistern to collect non-potable water. "Dal’s efforts at green building began with the Rowe Building in the 1990s," says Rochelle Owen, director of Dalhousie’s Office of Sustainability. "But here we’re really stepping it up a notch and it’s a part of larger, more cohesive effort." The building’s designers are hoping to earn a gold LEED rating. LEED (standing for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the green building rating system developed to spur green design.
