Membership FAQ
What are some of the cost-saving benefits of being a member of the Chamber?
In addition to providing the strongest voice to government on behalf of your business, the Chamber offers a variety of tangible benefits that include something for every business. Your yearly membership will more than pay for itself by taking advantage of the monetary savings offered by our comprehensive benefits package. For more information on benefits, contact our Membership & Marketing Consultants, Barbi Holland (barbi@halifaxchamber.com or (902) 481-1228) or Lindsay Best (lindsay@halifaxchamber.com or (902) 481-1236).
What are certificates of origin and does the Chamber issue them?
Few Chamber members are aware of what this service entails, but yes we do certify certificates of origin (COO). Any company that exports goods to another country should be interested in COOs. It is a document certifying the country of origin of the merchandise required by certain foreign countries for tariff purposes. Whether you will require a COO depends on a variety of factors: 1) destination of the goods being shipped; 2) what the goods are; and 3) if it is requested by the bank or financial institution involved in the export sale. It is the responsibility of the exporter to determine if a COO is required and to produce the document. The Chamber can provide exporters with a blank template if required. If you require a COO and are a Chamber member, you are entitled to a 40% discount on the cost of this service, which can be acquired at the Chamber office at 656 Windmill Rd., Burnside. For more information, contact our Member Services Manager, Jennifer Pierce at (902) 481-1227 or jenn@halifaxchamber.com
What events does the Chamber organize?
The Chamber works hard to ensure that our event offerings meet the needs of our diverse membership. As a result, we organize 50 events per year that range from two annual dinners with keynote speakers, to a Business-to-Business Expo (Metro Halifax's largest trade show for small business), to the Halifax Business Awards that celebrate local business success. The Chamber also organizes lunch-hour seminars, monthly networking events (free to members and non-members alike) throughout Metro Halifax and the Distinguished Speakers Series consisting of breakfasts and luncheons featuring high-profile political and business leaders. As a member you receive a discounted price for all paying events.
How do I pay for Chamber invoices online?
Invoices for Chamber membership dues or event registrations can be paid quickly and securely online. Simply click on the "Pay Bills Online" icon on the main page and follow the easy on-screen steps.
How does my business host a "Commerce Connections" networking event?
Chamber networking events are held all over Metro Halifax and require a sponsor fee and a location large enough to hold a group from 50-200+ people, depending on the event you would like to host. All sponsors and hosts must be Chamber members. Please contact the Events Team at (902) 468-7111 for more specific information on networking events. Attending networking events is free to everyone, and non-members are welcome! The only admission is your business card.
I have a great speaker for the Distinguished Speakers Series. How do I get this person in front of the Chamber's audience?
The Chamber organizes about 12 breakfast or luncheon events each year as part of our Distinguished Speakers Series. Speakers, or an agency representative, are asked to forward a proposal to the Chamber's Events Team that includes the speaker's bio, an outline of the topic to be presented and a brief description of the attraction for Chamber members. An internal committee reviews all proposals and will respond to your request. Each session of the Distinguished Speakers Series has a sponsorship fee of $3,500 and speakers, or their agency, should be prepared to provide or assist in securing the sponsor support.
How do I get a copy of the Chamber's annual calendar of events?
The Chamber strives to get event information to our members in a timely manner. Most networking events are scheduled up to six months in advance, our annual dinners and the B2B Expo are scheduled one year in advance and the Distinguished Speakers Series are scheduled on a monthly basis. All events are entered on the event section of our website as soon as they are confirmed by the Chamber.
I'm uncomfortable in networking situations. What support can the Chamber provide?
Through our commitment to provide support to our local business community and individual members, the Chamber offers all members the opportunity to attend our "Networking for Success" seminar free of charge. This seminar is designed to assist you in becoming a more effective networker and expand your business contacts. Representatives from the Chamber's Ambassadors Committee attend all events and are there to help you become more comfortable with the networking experience. Your networking skills will improve with each networking event you attend.
Are all Chamber events wheelchair accessible?
When booking venues for Chamber events our staff makes every effort to ensure that the location will be accessible to all members.
