Press Release

The Halifax Chamber of Commerce was not surprised by the fiscally prudent 2008 federal budget

February 26, 2007, Halifax, NS-“Much of the stimulus measures that one normally finds in a pre-election budget were contained in the October Economic Update,” says Valerie Payn, President of the Halifax Chamber of Commerce. “Minister Flaherty’s budget was cautious during a period of economic uncertainty.”

The Chamber had prepared a checklist of priorities that were compared to the budget address and the full budget document. “While we haven’t had time to analyse all the details we have seen some progress on priority items in our check list,” says Payn, “the budget had items ranging from the introduction of the Tax Pre-Paid Savings Plan to a significant debt reduction plan.”

The government is paying attention to what is important to the long term health of this country. This includes public private partnerships as a way to finance more and better services to Canadians, more ways for students to finance their education, and assistance to manufacturers who have been having such a hard time over the past few years.

“Even though the Canadian economy still seems to be booming, we are outperforming, or at least out lasting the US economy, a budget that projects too much economic growth wouldn’t be wise. The combination of a reduction in spending and the already in place tax cuts has created a balanced budget that puts us in a good defensive position should our economy face challenges in the coming year” says Payn.
