Chamber announces addition of International Business of the Year category for 2012  Halifax Business Awards

Halifax, NS, July 15th, 2011 – The Halifax Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the addition of a new category, International Business of the Year, to the 2012 Halifax Business Awards. The category, sponsored by Nova Scotia Business Inc., will recognize local businesses that have used international markets and connections to international value chains as a strategy to grow their business and be more profitable.

“We are very excited to be adding this category to our already successful Awards show,” says Chamber President Valerie Payn. “For the past 12 years our Business Awards have recognized the business success stories in our city, and the addition of the International Business category allows us to pay special tribute to those that are based here but doing business around the world and expanding into new markets, helping to strengthen and grow Nova Scotia’s economy.”

TheInternational Business of the Year category will measure those nominated based on the following criteria: total percentage/value of exports; percentage oflocally-made content exported; impact of nominated business on local economy; and business growth and development.

TheInternational Business of the Year category will also serve as a funnel for the Halifax category at NSBI’s annual Export Achievement Awards.

“Helping companies increase their international economic activity from Nova Scotia is a key part of NSBI’s strategy, on behalf of the Province, to encourage innovation, attract investment, increase payroll through higher-value jobs, and drive growth at home,” says Stephen Lund, CEO of Nova Scotia Business Inc. “NSBI works with hundreds of Nova Scotia businesses in markets around the world. HRM is home to many internationally recognized companies so we expect to see a strong showing of candidates for this award”.

The 2012 Halifax Business Awards will be held at the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront on Thursday, January 26, 2012. Nominations for the International Business of the Year category are open now at www.halifaxchamber.com.  .
