Press Release

Mayoralty debate scheduled for September 25, 2008

July 22, 2008- Halifax, NS –The Halifax Chamber of Commerce announces that both Mayor Kelly and Councillor Sheila Fougere have confirmed their participation in the Chamber’s Mayoralty Debate scheduled for September 25, 2008. Any new candidates will also be invited to participate in the debate, nomination day for the municipal election is September 9th.

The debate which will take place at Neptune Theatre will be moderated and allow candidates the opportunity to discuss and debate their views on a wide range of issues facing Halifax.

In the months leading up to and following the municipal election the Chamber will be advocating on behalf of its members on a variety of election priority areas from transportation to downtown development.

“Halifax is in an exciting period of growth and it is time to begin looking to the future to ensure that we embrace this growth,” says Valerie Payn, Chamber president. “We need to ensure that we have a council that is forward thinking and that is committed to helping grow Halifax for the future”.

The Chamber will also be spreading the word about the importance of voting by providing information to employers to help educate and encourage their employees to take an interest and participate in the election. “Voting is the best way to ensure that as business owners, employees and Halifax citizens your voice is heard,” says Payn. “We have had low voter turnout in past elections and it is important that each and every one of us makes informed decisions and gets out to vote”.

In Halifax’s last municipal by-election voter turnout was only 10.2% and in the last municipal election less than 50%. Election day is October 18, 2008.
