Chamber throws support behind new Convention Centre
For immediate release
June 27, 2010- Halifax, NS- The Halifax Chamber of Commerce in a rare move is throwing its support behind the proposed new Convention Centre. “It’s time to get this development moving,” says Chamber President Valerie Payn. “We have seen all the plans, all the studies and all the business cases and they indicate that this project is a winner”.
The Halifax Chamber of Commerce, as part of its role as a business advocacy organization, continuously strives to build and strengthen our local business culture through a variety of different mechanisms and resources. One particular mechanism is to firmly support and stand behind the initiatives, projects, and policies that reflect the Chamber’s strategic priorities of economic growth, competitive positioning, people, health care, and sustainability.
“The proposed Convention Centre project is unique in that it represents practically all of our priority areas as well as the promise of growth, vibrancy, and an overall enhanced quality of life for the residents of our municipality,” says Payn.
“The benefits of this new convention centre will be threefold – job creation for our people, growth for our economy, and tax revenues for our provincial government,” adds Payn. “But economic benefits aside, these meetings, conventions, concerts, and other community functions that could be held at this new space are important contributing factors to our community’s prosperity and pleasure”.
“This proposed Convention Centre has been studied to death and debated past the point of usefulness,” says Payn, “Haligonians are sick and tired of losing out on great opportunities because we can’t get complete consensus. With a community as diverse as this one you will never get total consensus on anything. It is time to be bold and make this important investment in our economic and community future.”
“Investing in our urban core is long overdue,” says Chamber president Valerie Payn. “We don’t have any more time to waste if we are going to turn our downtown core in a showcase of sustainable urbanism in the foreseeable future.”
Community consultations such as HRMbyDesign have confirmed that development of Halifax’s urban core is a priority. “We know there is an appetite for more development and revitalization downtown, and the proposed Convention Centre could be the project that gets people excited about the great future Halifax has ahead of it.” says Payn. “It is time now for action to begin.”
“This development is a progressive step towards enhancing our ability to compete with other cities for these important events, growing our economy, securing sustainable jobs and our competitive position as the Atlantic hub city, and welcoming the world,” says Payn.
