Press Release

Long shot rail cut a reality

March 5, 2008- Halifax, NS- The Halifax Chamber of Commerce was excited by Premier Rodney MacDonald’s announcement today that outlined the potential infrastructure projects to help transform Nova Scotia into the Atlantic Gateway of North America.

“We are excited about this announcement for our province,” says Valerie Payn, President of the Halifax Chamber of Commerce. “These new initiatives will allow our port to grow and prosper, maximize the competitive advantages inherent in our ice-free location, improve existing infrastructure issues, and will further stimulate growth for the whole region.”

The Premier’s announcement highlighted a new multi-transportation corridor to Halifax's Ocean terminal, a new Gateway Logistics Park adjacent to the Burnside Industrial Park, the Burnside Connector, and a new refrigerated terminal at Halifax Stanfield International Airport.

The Halifax Chamber has long been an advocate for the transportation sector in the Atlantic Region with its Transportation Committee history spanning more than 250 years. “This is the second exciting announcement from the Province in recent months promoting the goals of the Economic Strategy,” says Payn. “It is  rewarding to see that our advocacy work is taking form and that all levels of government are partnering to move our region forward.”

The Chamber’s Transportation Committee, currently chaired by Robert Gaede (Clearview Promotions), has a mandate to monitor transport policy that affects the region and, in doing so, affects the business environment for members of the Halifax Chamber of Commerce. This committee is tasked with: assessing the impact of such policy and influencing policy decisions at the federal, provincial and municipal level on behalf of members of the Chamber; liaising with transportation policy and research organizations within Atlantic Canada; and taking leadership positions on issues of importance to Atlantic Canada.
