Staff presentations make convincing arguments for convention centre says Chamber

For immediate release

November 9, 2010- Halifax, NS- Presentations delivered by staff to City Council at this morning’s Committee of the Whole provided Mayor and Council with a balanced and quite convincing review of the proposed convention centre.

“While we are not privy to Council’s deliberations, having seen this presentation, along with the countless other studies from both sides of the argument, we can appreciate the decision they have ahead of them, but feel strongly that it shouldn’t be a difficult one,” says Chamber president Valerie Payn.

“The presentation made today says a lot,” says Payn. “It is balanced but brimming with optimism that, quite frankly, is refreshing to see from city staff.”

The Halifax Chamber is optimistic that Mayor and Council will see the long term benefits of approving the proposed convention centre at this week’s council meeting.  “It’s time to get this development moving,” says Payn. “We’ve gone to the meetings, we’ve seen the plans, read the reports, and heard the economic forecasts -- and they all point to long term benefits for our city and province”

While there has been lots of debate over the issue of property taxes the Chamber believes these details will be worked out as the project progresses and that getting approval should be the target right now. “There is certainly room for the province and the city to negotiate with regards to property taxes as well as a plan to find the best way to finance this exciting project,” says Payn.

“Despite the need by Council to hear from all of these outside groups, we are confident that at the end of the day, they will heed the recommendations made by staff,” says Payn.

The Chamber believes the convention centre is a progressive step towards enhancing Halifax’s ability to compete with other cities for these important events, growing our economy, securing sustainable jobs and our competitive position as the Atlantic hub city, and welcoming the world.
