Press Release

“Let’s get going on downtown development” says Halifax Chamber of Commerce

October 31, 2007- Halifax, NS- The Halifax Chamber of Commerce couldn’t agree more with the Downtown Halifax Business Commission that it is time we start moving on development in the urban core.

“Investing in our urban core is long overdue,” says Chamber president Valerie Payn. “We don’t have any more time to waste before the effects of our dying core begin to spread to other areas of the municipality and the province.”

Community consultations such as HRM by Design have confirmed that development of Halifax’s urban core is a priority. “We know there is an appetite for more development and revitalization downtown,” says Payn. “There has been clear proof of that throughout the past few months. It is time now for action to begin.”

The importance of creating a clear, timely and transparent development process is paramount in embracing growth. The sooner we can encourage development, the sooner we can have more business, people and culture in our downtown core. “We’ve already experienced “opportunity costs” with development projects like the Twisted Sisters,” says Payn. “These costs have set us back by both time and money while other jurisdictions are making headway.”

The city’s Economic Strategy outlines 5 actions for revitalizing Halifax’s “Urban Heart”. “We have a plan, we just need to put it into action and soon rather than later” continues Payn. “There are actions we can take, on a municipal level, an organizational level and on an individual level. Each of us can have a role in revitalizing our city.”

“The challenge now is to see projects such as HRM by Design through and to work towards the goals set in the Economic Strategy to make the revitalization of our urban core as expeditious as possible,” Says Payn.

Check out the Chamber’s Top Ten Baby Steps to Supporting the Economic Strategy for ways for you to get started revitalizing the city.
