Halifax Chamber is prepared for a pandemic and encourages other business to do the same
Halifax, NS- October 8, 2009 – The Halifax Chamber of Commerce is one step ahead of the game as today Premier Dexter’s NDP government will present a bill in the legislature that would give the Province the authority to review the emergency plans of non-government entities. As flu season approaches and the threat of an H1N1 pandemic is growing, this is a time when businesses in Halifax and throughout the country are preparing for the worst.
“It is important for any organization, particularly small businesses, to have a plan for a crisis,” says Chamber president Valerie Payn. “We are a small business of 15 and we need to ensure that our staff are taken care of in addition to meeting the needs of our members, so having a solid plan in place for us was a must.”
The Halifax Chamber is prepared for pandemic emergencies and encourages its membership and the Halifax Business Community to do the same.
“We have made the Chamber’s Pandemic Plan available on our website so that all our members can review it and adapt it to their own business needs,” continues Payn. “We have also been providing our members with a continuing education series on pandemic and continuity planning and a wide range of resources from leading experts in the field of pandemic and continuity planning. All of this information can be found on our website and is updated on an ongoing basis.”
The Chamber is looking to lead by example and encourage other businesses to develop plans of their own. “Planning takes time” says Payn. “But in a time of crisis, being prepared is key, which makes it more important than ever for businesses and people to be prepared and to work together. Sharing our pandemic preparedness plan is one way for us to reach out to those businesses and communities and to really encourage those businesses that haven’t already to begin planning”.
