Chamber encouraged by Councillor’s support for Halifax brand
February 10, 2010- Halifax, NS- The Halifax Chamber of Commerce was very encouraged by the support at yesterday’s council meeting to stop calling our city HRM and begin calling it Halifax.
“If you ask someone in Toronto or Vancouver what the capital city of Nova Scotia is they don’t say HRM, they say Halifax,” says Chamber President Valerie Payn. “Encouraging everyone to use the city name of Halifax will bring together our business community and create a more united city front within the rest of Canada and on the international stage.”
“Our members generally agreed that the forward phase of the city should be Halifax, not HRM," says Payn; “it is not an issue of Cole Harbour vs. Halifax or Bedford vs. Halifax, it is HRM vs. Halifax.”
When this issue was brought to light the last time in 2007, the Chamber conducted a survey asking members their thoughts on Halifax vs. HRM branding. 68 per cent of respondents stated that when referring to city they do not call it HRM, but rather refer to it as Halifax.
“It is important that we continue to recognize individual communities within the Halifax area. These areas such as Cole Harbour, Bedford and Sackville are self sustaining communities with unique history,” says Payn, “but people outside of our province don’t know where these communities are. Ensuring that we use the name Halifax when describing where one lives to people not familiar with the area is one step towards creating unity for our city.”
