Chamber participates in first contract arbitration consultations

September 23, 2011- Halifax, NS - The Halifax Chamber of Commerce was pleased to participate in Minister More’s first contract arbitration information and consultation session and is curious to see what the outcomes will be. “We were excited to participate in the informative session,” says Chamber President Valerie Payn. “Although at first blush it certainly appears to us that the use of first contract arbitration is a solution to a problem that does not exist.”

“But that is why we are happy the government is consulting with the private sector employers,” adds Payn. The Chamber has worked with governments at all levels to reduce the amount of red tape that burdens business and particularly small business. “Adding legislation and the accompanying regulations is certainly a reversal of the Chamber’s efforts to reduce red tape,” says Payn. “We are  participating in hopes of better understanding if this additional regulation is wanted, and perhaps most importantly, necessary.”

“We always encourage government to approach the ideas and issues of business with an open mind and an attitude that ‘starts with yes’,” continues Payn. “And I think we owe the same courtesy to government when they reach out to the business community.” The Chamber has been doing research on the arguments both for and against the use of first contract arbitration including a preliminary survey of its members one the issue that indicates that our members are opposed to the first contract arbitration changes to the Trade Union Act.

“The Chamber will support whatever measures are needed to make Nova Scotia more competitive and productive and what will be looking for is how this change will contribute that,” says Payn.
