Valerie Payn
President & CEO

The Chamber

If business was like boxing they would announce my name over the loud speaker as I walked into a room, I can hear it now, "...and entering from the south door is Valerie 'The Chamber' Payn". Thankfully business is nothing like boxing, but the title might not be too far off. I have been with the Chamber since 1991 and over my 17 years here sometimes it can be hard for me to tell where the Chamber ends and I begin. I know you're not supposed to take your work home with you, but when you work with such a dynamic team, and work on such exciting initiatives, and with such passionate business leaders, it's hard to leave that behind at the end of the day. My work at the Chamber inspires me to be constantly learning from, and sharing with others in our community. It is our successes as individuals and individual businesses that make organizations like the Chamber a success, so to me we are two in the same.

In addition to her Chamber responsibilities, Valerie has served on the Board of Directors for the Business Development Bank of Canada, the Canadian Sales Professional Association, and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Public Affairs.

Valerie has also been involved in a variety of community projects and boards for organizations throughout the Halifax area such as, United Way, Feed Nova Scotia, Salvation Army and the Halifax International Airport Authority.

Valerie is a recipient of the Chamber of Commerce Executives of Canada Executive of the Year Award (1996) and the Progress Women of Excellence Award for Communication and Public Affairs (1993). In June 2003 she was named one of Atlantic Canada's top CEO's by Atlantic Business.

Valerie received her educational background and work experience in Public Administration at the University of Prince Edward Island and earned an MBA from Saint Mary's University in Halifax. As part of her commitment to continuous learning, Valerie has most recently completed a Chartered Director designation through McMaster University and the Conference Board of Canada.
